Assisting Victim
If a person is injured or becomes seriously ill, notify Georgia Tech Campus Police at 404.894.2500. Provide dispatcher with basic information: location; the nature or kind of injury or illness; and whether or not the victim needs an ambulance or medical assistance. If you cannot provide basic information, the dispatcher will send an officer to assess the situation, provide emergency first aid, and request an ambulance at the officer's discretion.
Serious Injuries
If the injury to an employee involves possible damage to the neck or back, the employee should not be moved unless it is absolutely necessary. Unskilled handling can do harm. If the injured employee must be moved, get help and try not to change the position in which the person was found. Call Campus Police at 404.894.2500 immediately and inform them of the possible nature of the injury. Campus Police will call for a properly equipped ambulance.
Georgia Tech Infirmary
The Infirmary is permitted to render first aid to Georgia Tech students only. Students employed by the Institute are considered to be employees during the hours they are on the job. Any student employee injured during the hours they are working on the job should be taken to Crawford Long Hospital or the nearest public hospital. Call the Campus Police at 404.894.2500 and they will assist in taking the injured employee to the place of treatment.
Biohazard Waste Pick-up
Please remember to contact Roy Stover (404.894.9258) at Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) to have your biohazard waste picked up. This should be done once a week or sooner if you accumulate more than three boxes per week. Empty bioboxes and liners are located in the package cage in the basement. Biohazard labels are located at the front desk in the administrative wing. Please ask Rudy Paratchek for assistance.
Labels should contain the following information:
- Faculty name
- Department
- Room number
- Building: IBB
- MSA Number: NA
- Peoplesoft Account Number:
Your account is charged $11.76 for each biobox picked up.
The biohazard waste should be packaged in the following manner:
- Autoclaved bags are to be put into bioboxes with liners.
- The liner is to be closed and the biobox should be taped shut.
- The completed biowaste label should be taped to the box by the pink copy.
- The lab gets the white copy, EH&S gets the yellow copy and the pink copy stays on the box.
EH&S will not pick up a box if:
- It is wet.
- It emits strong odor.
- It does not have a completed label.
- It is not sealed properly.

Radiation Safety
The Office of Radiological Safety (ORS) would like to remind faculty and staff that all radiation-producing devices, and radioactive material (sealed or unsealed) must be registered with our office PRIOR TO USE. Georgia Tech Radiation Safety Policy requires initial inspections by trained ORS personnel, training for equipment users and the appropriate postings, emergency procedures and required surveys to be in place BEFORE USE for all x-ray producing devices.
ORS rules are in place to ensure compliance with Georgia Department of Human Resources and Department of Natural Resources rules and regulations. Non-compliance can result in fines, citation of the PI, and the inability to use radioactive material or x-rays.
Authorization from the Radiation Safety Committee is required through submission of FORM A before any x-ray unit can be installed on campus. Form A for the use of radioactive material and instrumentation that contains radioactive sources is also available.
The Office of Radiological Safety will gladly assist in all Form A preparations or any other matters. Our goal is to provide a safe working environment for the use of x-ray devices and radioactive materials on our campus. RAM and x-ray Safety Training are offered once a month. Please visit the ORS Web site to download forms and register for training. Any additional questions, please contact the Campus Radiation Safety Officer, Nazia Zakir at 404.894.3621.
