N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes of the Late Transition Metals: Synthetic and Catalytic Studies

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are a versatile class of ligand for processes involving transition metals. Their very strong trans-effect favors the formation of complexes with unusually low coordination numbers. This talk describes the synthesis of a series of linear complexes of the Group 11 metals, with the general formula (NHC)M–X, and their application to processes such as carbon–fluorine bond formation, borylation, and carbon dioxide fixation; related complexes of other late transition metals will also be presented.
