Petit Undergraduate Research Scholars Mentoring Information
The Petit Undergraduate Research Scholars program provides an opportunity for graduate students and post doctoral fellows to mentor undergraduate scholars for valuable menoriting and project management experience while allowing them to further their research interests.
The 2010 program will run from January through December and the application review and interview process will take place in September/October of 2009.
Benefits:
- Graduate student mentors receive $750 for travel
- Great CV builder, most employers prefer PhD’s with management experience
- Labs receive $2,000 for materials and supplies
Mentor Application Guidelines:
- Meet with your advisor to ask if mentoring an undergraduate is a good fit for you and your lab.
- Ask advisor to send an email to Colly Mitchell stating that they know that you are submitting a project for consideration.
- Submit a two-page project proposal that includes: objectives/specific aims of the project, methods to be used, expected outcomes, potential for publication of the work, effect this project will have and relationship of this project to your thesis research. If you included images, they must fit within the 2 pages.
- Proposal format must be in Times Roman, 12 point font with 1 inch margins. Any proposals submitted that are not in this format will not be accepted.
- Submit your proposal to Colly Mitchell by November 2, 2009.
Project Selection:
- Only projects which allow undergraduates to work independently will be considered
- Projects will be reviewed and scored by a committee
- A lab may submit more than one proposal, but each mentor can only submit one proposal.
Timeline:
- Undergraduates submit scholarship applications through September 15, 2009
- Post docs and graduate students submit project ideas (along with faculty approval email) by November 2, 2009
- Mentors will be notified of selection by mid November 2009
- Mentors and scholars are matched by the end of November 2009
- Program runs from January - December 2010.
Other Program Requirements:
- All mentors must be available to mentor scholars throughout the full calendar year, January 2010 through December 2010.
- As a mentor, you will be asked to attend an orientation session in January 2010. Additionally, you may be invited to donor events throughout the year to highlight the program.
- A progress report and evaluation must be conducted on your mentee at the end of spring, summer and fall semesters.
