The Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience Building
In 1999 the Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience moved into a $30 million facility on the campus of Georgia Tech. This is the first step in the development of facilities mirroring Tech's commitment to biorelated and environmental research in the decades to come.
IBB occupies a three-story building with a total size of nearly 150,000 gross square feet. The building is configured to facilitate the interdisciplinary research programs of fourty faculty and their research groups, including both graduate and undergraduate students.
The concept behind the building is to provide an environment to integrate the research efforts of the bioengineers on campus with those of the bioscientists in a way that fosters synergistic collaborative research. The building is also designed to provide the flexibility needed to rapidly adapt to the growing needs in biorelated research and healthcare delivery in the next decade.
Research areas represented in the building include: molecular and structural biology; cellular and tissue engineering; biomechanics and bioengineering; cellular and molecular biology; orthopedic cell and tissue engineering; drug design; and cell biology.
